Who Am I REALLY?

“You may believe that what God says about His children in His Word is true, but do you fully receive those truths for yourself? Do you believe it’s true about YOU?”

My small group leader asked this a couple of months ago and it has disturbed me ever since. It disturbs me because I don’t think I have fully received for myself what God says about me. And worse yet, I don’t think I believed it.

My small group leader also gave me a bookmark that I have kept in my Bible ever since. The top is labeled “My Identity.” I have read it many times, but there are three points that are HUGE revelation for me:

Satan’s lie: Your identity comes from what you have done.
God’s truth: Your identity comes from what God has done for you.

Satan’s lie: Your identity comes from what people say about you.
God’s truth: Your identity comes from what God says about you.

Satan’s lie: Your behavior tells you what to believe about yourself.
God’s truth: Your belief about yourself determines your behavior. (1)

Who I am (or my identity) and what I believe about myself as a child of God should come from His Word.

The definition of identity – “who someone is: the qualities, beliefs, etc., that make a particular person or group different from others. (2)

My seven-year-old son (who we adopted from Ethiopia in 2009) is also struggling with his identity. He asked me the other day, “Mom, who am I? Why am I even here? It feels pointless.” His questions broke my heart, and made me sad. It made me sad for him, and because it resonated with something in me as well.

So what does God say about us, about our identity? Who are we? What do I really believe? And do my actions and behaviors and thoughts line up with what I say I believe? Ugh.

I have been doing some digging (for my son and for me), and I will continue to dig, until I feel fully confident in Whose I am. God says this about searching for wisdom is His Word: …and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God (Proverbs 2:4-5). I don’t know about you, but I want that wisdom and knowledge! It is life to our souls and our minds.

I have written about this before; but as I find more and more truth in God’s Word, I am getting freer and freer. Praise the Lord! I believe this information is that important, and KEY to our relationship with God, Jesus, and all those we love most. I felt strongly compelled to share with you. This is what I’ve found so far:

  • I am forgiven, washed clean, righteous, healed, and victorious. Am I living like this is true?
He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. – 1 Peter 2:24

  • I am a child of God, daughter of the King of Kings, co-heir with Christ, and adopted into God’s family. Now that is amazing!
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! – 1 John 3:1
Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ – Romans 8:17

  • I am a new creation in Christ. I am God’s masterpiece. I am chosen by Him.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new has come! – 2 Corinthians 5:17
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. – Ephesians 2:10

  • I am free. Am I living free?
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. – Galatians 5:1

  • I am delivered from the powers of darkness and evil. I can take every thought captive with the Holy Spirit’s help. Beth Moore used the word “unbound.” I love that.
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the Kingdom of the Son he loves… - Colossians 1:13
On the contrary, we have divine power to demolish strongholds…and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. – 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

  • -I am fully accepted and loved by God. I am secure because of Jesus. I am never alone. I am complete in Christ.
I have loved you with an everlasting love. I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. – Jeremiah 31:3
The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. – Deuteronomy 31:8
In Christ you have been brought to fullness. – Colossians 2:10
In him we were also chosen… - Ephesians 1:11
  • God will meet all my needs.
And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:19

  • I have full access to God through Jesus and I am a member of God’s household! I am greatly blessed. He invites me to come close to Him. I am not a bother to God! (I used to believe this.)
For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household. – Ephesians 2:18-19
You hear, O Lord, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry. – Psalm 10:17

  • I am free from condemnation. This one is big for me.
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. – Romans 8:1

  • I am appointed to bear fruit. I am a disciple of Jesus if I abide in His Word.
“If you hold to my teachings, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” – John 8:31
“I am the vine and you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit.” – John 15:5

  • I have eternal life.
God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. – 1 John 5:11

  • I am an overcomer by the blood of Jesus and the word of my testimony.
They overcame him (the devil) by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. – Revelation 12:11

  • I don’t have to be afraid.
“Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.” – Revelation 1:18

  • God delights in me, Tammy Gerber (put your name here). He pursues me and wants a deep relationship with me.
The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you, in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing. – Zephaniah 3:17
Delight means “great pleasure or satisfaction.” (3)

A lot of us know Jeremiah 29:11 (For I know the plans I have for you…). But have you ever kept reading? I LOVE the verses after Jeremiah 29:11 just as much:

“Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity.” – Jeremiah 29:12-14

I feel like shouting, “I have truly found the Lord, and I am His daughter. He is not only my Savior and Redeemer, but He is Father, Abba, and Daddy to me. He is setting me free!!”

Like my small group leader said, “I pray you can take what has always been true, and make it your reality. He has always been with you and you are deeply loved, chosen, accepted, and His beloved daughter.”

Lord, your Word is a treasure to me and I want to stand up and shout about it! I pray we would all know the gift of your awesome Word in our lives. It is key to the truth about our identity in You alone. It is power against the enemy and life and freedom for us if would would abide in it daily. I am so close, Lord! Keep working a miracle in me. Plant the truths of my identity in You deep in my heart and spill them out onto my children as well. Amen.

I attended a Beth Moore conference recently. A verse she kept using sums in up:

Blessed is she who has believed!…Luke 1:45

I stumbled across this song recently and I just love it. It’s called “Jesus Loves Me,” by Chris Tomlin. It’s not the song we all think of and often sing to our kids, but it’s so powerful and speaks to me deeply about my identity in Christ. I hope it will bless you as well today.
