A One Word Year

I googled the top 10 New Year’s Resolutions and here they are:

  1. Lose weight
  2. Exercise
  3. Stop smoking
  4. Enjoy life more
  5. Quit drinking
  6. Get out of debt
  7. Spend more time with family
  8. Learn something new
  9. Organize stuff
  10. Help others more

What do you think about these?

Here would be my personal list (after I read the above list):

  1. Lose weight
  2. Exercise
  3. Laugh more
  4. Enjoy life more
  5. Read the entire Bible in a year
  6. Get out of debt
  7. Spend more quality time with family
  8. Read more to learn something new
  9. Organize my house/life
  10. Help others more.

However, after reading both lists, it makes me feel completely overwhelmed, which means I won’t do more than one or two things on my list anyway. The rest will just feel like unreachable goals. One more goal I set and didn’t complete. Can anyone relate?

It’s too much. I’m setting myself up for failure with my long lists. I go through this process every year in January and I’m so tired of it.

I had breakfast with a friend recently and she shared about a book her husband read called, “One Word That Will Change Your Life”(1). The book explains how to simplify your life and business by focusing on just one word for the entire year. That is all I know about the book; I haven’t read it. But I LOVE the idea of picking one word to focus on.

What if we just picked one word as our New Year’s Resolution? Instead of a list we can’t possibly accomplish, how about one word that we can apply to every decision and plan we make this year? It feels much more manageable. And what if it actually worked?

What if I asked God what my one word should be? What if you asked Him what your one word should be?

What if it changed your entire year?! What if it changed the way we live every day? What if it changed our lives?...

I love the thought of it, and the possibilities. It gives me hope and it doesn’t overwhelm me. It excites me and motivates me for the coming year.

My friend suggested the word “de-stress” as my one word. I laughed. Yes, that would be a great one for me.

But God has given me another word. He’s been whispering it to my heart for months…probably for years.

Rest.

“Rest Daughter.”

(I’m sure I can also apply the word “de-stress” under “rest” somewhere as well!)

I’m excited to share with you what God has been showing me about rest next week.

Will you ask God what your one word should be?

I would love to hear them if you are willing to share below! What would your one word be?

Lord, show us the simplicity of just one word for 2016. What do You want us to focus on in the coming year? Amen.

If you are an imperfect wife, mom, daughter, or friend, struggling to stay focused on God in the craziness and find joy in the heartache, then we have something in common. I am a recovering perfectionist and daughter of the King, slowly learning to fully trust the One who sees me just as I am, and is already pleased. I’m so glad you are here.
