Mind-Blowing Love

Show me the wonder of your great love, you who save by your right hand those who take refuge in you from their foes. Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings. - Psalm 17:7-8

Recently I read about an experiment done with a group of women. They were told to turn to each other and say, “God loves me so much.” Instead, most of the women turned to the woman next to them and said, “God loves you so much.” The switch in words was brought to their attention and the women were asked to do it again correctly this time. They were visibly uncomfortable with the switch in words.

Why?

Why is it that we easily accept that God lavishly loves others, but we often have trouble accepting that truth for ourselves?

I love Beth Moore’s Answer to this question in her Bible study called “Breaking Free.”

“Because we relentlessly insist on trying to humanize God. We tend to love people according to how they act, and we keep trying to recreate God in our image.” – Beth Moore

We forget that God doesn’t love like we do. I’m SO grateful he doesn’t!

God is love – 1 John 4:16
God is Spirit – John 4:24

When you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, His Spirit lives in you. Wherever God’s Spirit is, so is His love.

“Only the places we allow the love of God to fully penetrate will be satisfied and therefore, liberated.” – Beth Moore

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge-that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. – Ephesians 3:17-19 (emphasis mine)

The Holy Spirit inside us is the One who helps us receive and grasp the depth of the love God has for us!

One more quote from Beth Moore: “God cannot make a decision for my life outside of His lavish love for me.”

I love that, and it brings me great courage.

I was walking with an old friend a few weeks ago, and God did something for me that made me feel so loved by Him.

My friend and I were catching up. She was sharing a deep hurt that she had been through years ago, and how she had longed to be comforted by God, but didn’t feel like he had been there when she needed him most. It left her with a question that came from deep inside her soul…does God really love me?

Years later, God gave her an overwhelming “yes!” to that question. As she was telling me what he had shown her, I felt God’s Spirit reminding me of the moment when that same question formed in my soul…after years of painful infertility and then losing the third baby to miscarriage…

I remember the moment my enemy whispered the lie in my ear in the doctor’s office…if God really loved you, this would not be happening to you.

As my friend was talking, I felt God say the same words to me that he said to her (only the details were mine):

“I have always loved you and I will always love you. That moment in the doctor’s office when you had lost your third child…I longed to comfort you and hold you. I was mourning with you. But you took off out of that office, and you slammed the door to your heart. You wouldn’t let me in; I longed to heal your broken heart. I tried to show you how much I loved you, but your pain and anger got in the way. I have been here all along. Trust my plan. Trust my love for you.” 

The revelation of God’s love and concern for me was overwhelming, and so freeing. I felt God’s love flowing down over me as my friend and I walked. And I felt peace. Finally, I could hear the answer to a nagging question that was buried deep in the pit of my soul.

And the answer was “Yes!” God really does love me with a love that “surpasses knowledge!”

Do you believe in His love for you? That is my prayer for you! That belief can set you free.

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of Lord is, there is freedom. - 2 Corinthians 3:17

God has been filling up my tank with his love over the last weeks, and it has changed me. I am free to love others, because I have fully received His love.

I want to leave you with this thought…

God’s love is the only thing you can never get too much of.

I love the story of King David dancing before the Lord in the Bible. He wasn’t afraid to worship God and show how much he loved him. He loved God more than what others thought of him. I want to be like that.

David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the Lord with all his might, while he and the entire house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets. – 2 Samuel 6:14

And maybe even be a little “undignified” (2 Samuel 6:22)…

After all, God's love for us is "wild and free." Shouldn't ours be too?
