He Runs After Me

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge-that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. – Ephesians 3:17-19

I believe every human being longs to be loved deeply. We want someone to desire us, to pursue us, and never fail us. The Bible says in Proverbs 19:22: “What a man desires is unfailing love.”

The problem is that we look to other human beings for this unfailing love, when God is the only One who can give it. No wonder we are constantly disappointed by our unrealistic expectations of others when they don’t love us a certain way. God’s love is the only love big enough to fill those shoes. Many a man claims to have unfailing love, but a faithful man who can find? – Proverbs 20:6

God started teaching me this concept years ago, but I’m just beginning to understand it fully. Yes, I’m learning that the biggest lessons God tries to teach me are not taught quickly, but usually through time and many painful trials. Ugh! Thank God for His endless grace and patience with me.

For years, I have found myself often disappointed with my husband Michael. I create unrealistic expectations in my mind of what he should do to show his love for me. Now let me say here that Michael is amazing and loves me more than anyone has ever loved me. He makes me feel beautiful and cherished, just the way I am.

But my point here is that Michael cannot read my mind. He cannot know the deepest longings and desires of my heart unless I tell him, and even then it’s still often difficult for him to fully grasp what I’m trying to say. After all, he is only human.

And I have learned that’s okay! Michael isn’t God and I need to stop expecting him to be. It seems like a simple concept, but I have struggled to grasp it. We could say this about anyone we are close to: our husbands, parents, family, children, and friends. Not one of them is equipped to fill the huge cavern in our soul that needs filling. Only God, the creator of our soul, can fill the hole.

Here is the best news though: God is awesome at filling the hole! He wants to be the One to fill those empty places in us. He loves us so much. I think I struggle to understand just how much. If we really could fully accept and receive the truth of how much God loves us, I think our lives would look different. They would be full (deep down in your souls) and joy-filled, with much more peace and less aching in our hearts.

Truth: The only way we are able to understand and to grasp how big God’s love for us is by His Holy Spirit in us. We receive the Holy Spirit when we accept Jesus into our hearts as Lord and Savior (Acts 2:38).

We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. – 1 Corinthians 2:12

God gave me a gift recently that I wanted to share: a glimpse into His BIG love for us. As I often do, I was running and had my worship music cranked up, listening to a song I’ve never heard before called, “Don’t Deserve You” by Plumb. The chorus says:

I don’t deserve your love, but you give it to me anyway.
Can’t get enough, you’re everything I need.
And when I walk away, you take off running and come right after me.
It’s what you do

And I don’t deserve you. (1)

You know that feeling, when you hear a song that reaches down into your soul and brings it to life? It was one of those moments. I had such an overwhelming sense of God’s presence and His love, and truth connected with my heart in those moments during the song...

Every time I walk away (or stomp away), when no one else would run right after me, God does. Every time. He doesn’t hesitate, or get tired, or get weary of me. He comes right after me. He pursues me. And He delights in doing so. That is amazing to me!

I don’t know whether to fall on my face in worship or stand up and shout! It brings me such joy and security. A really huge revelation for me.

God not only tells us He loves us, but He DEMONSTRATES that He loves us. I don’t know about you, but I want someone who shows me they love me, not someone who just says they love me.

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. – 1 John 4:10

For great is your love toward me; you have delivered me from the depths of the grave. – Psalm 86:13

Jesus died so that we can live. That is the ultimate demonstration of love.

God’s love is perfect toward us. It is pure and never fails. He not only fills our deepest needs, but also our deepest wants, if we would open our hearts fully to Him.

I wanted to say here that I have studied God’s love a lot and I recommend Beth Moore’s Bible study called Breaking Free (2) as just one great resource, not only to study finding freedom from bondage, but also to study God’s love toward us (I think the two go together). The reason I love Beth’s studies is because they are deeply rooted in Scripture and she constantly uses Bible verses to teach us…God’s Word changes lives!

I read “The Jesus Storybook Bible” by Sally Lloyd-Jones to my kids before school in the mornings. I love the way she describes God’s love throughout the book and I thought it was a simple yet profound way to sum up the way God loves us. She kept repeating this phrase over and over, which I think is good for children and adults to hear:

“his (God’s) wonderful, never stopping, never giving up, unbreaking, always and forever love.” (3) I love that.

Lord, I am in awe that you love us the way you do. You not only love us, but you delight in loving us. And You never hesitate in your love for us. Thank you for running after me when I’m headed the wrong direction, away from You. We do not deserve your love, but we are so thankful You give it to us anyway. Fill us with your Spirit, and help us to grasp how deeply you love us today. Amen.
