Go Forward!

Do you ever find yourself circling back to old lies or old baggage (of any kind) that you thought you had gotten rid of?

Do you ever feel “stuck” in the same thing you’ve been stuck on for years and years? Is there something you need to let go of and move on from?

I heard a teaching the other day by Beth Moore that convicted my heart as only God can.

Beth was reading in Exodus about Moses and the Israelites crossing the Red Sea:

When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord. They said to Moses, “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt? Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”

The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward. Lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the people of Israel may go through the sea on dry ground. - Exodus 14:10-16 (ESV) (emphasis mine)

The Israelites were scared to death and freaking out. They saw the Egyptians coming after them and begged Moses to let them go back and serve the Egyptians. They wanted to go back to their slavery!

Do you ever do that? Do we spend too much time looking back and not enough looking forward?

Moses told the people to stand still and be silent and the Lord would fight for them (Exodus 14:14). This is a popular and really great verse. I have it hanging on a plaque in my kitchen. I love this verse. But in this instance it wasn’t what God was saying…

God was saying, “Why are they crying to me? Tell the people go forward.”

The people wanted to go back.
Moses wanted them to stand still.
But God said, “Go forward.”

For years, I have been doing a lot of healing and releasing much baggage. But I can often go back to those lies I used to believe about my identity and who I am, and forget that I am a daughter of the King of Kings. I believe God is asking me to completely let go of the past and step into the mission and purpose that he planned for me before I was even born. I believe he is asking me to go forward in the victory that is already mine because I am his child.

When you feel like you have stalled out...when you feel stuck in a situation, ask God to show you His will. Maybe he’s asking you to let go and finally go forward!

Or, where are you too comfortable? Is there an area where God is nudging you to go forward (or a risk he is asking you to take), with his Spirit guiding the way? He won’t ask you to go forward unless he’s going with you!

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. - Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)

You will never get to your promised land if you aren’t ever open to going forward.

Will you ask him about it today?

Father, would you show us those areas where we are stuck and give us the courage and strength to go forward into your will for us? In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
