Counting The Cost

I was listening to a message on YouTube by Francis Chan recently called, “The Cost Of Discipleship.” He said something that really hit me hard…

“Lord, You are my only fear and deepest love.” - Francis Chan

And he read Mathew 10:28. (ESV) “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” I’m noticing more and more that Jesus didn’t sugarcoat His words; He was very direct.

I am afraid of so many things. It dawned on me that if God were the only thing I feared, it would take care of all of my other fears! I’m sorry, Lord. Change my heart. Change my thinking.

Two questions Francis Chan addressed in his message:

1. Are you all in?

So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. - Luke 14:33 (ESV)

Have you ever stopped and thought about what this actually means?

2. Have you counted the cost?

If the world hates you, know that it has hated me too…A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. - John 15:18, 20 (ESV)

Jesus said it was going to be hard. Really hard. We are in a war, not on vacation. Think about what horrible things Jesus endured on earth for us; not mention taking the sins of the entire world upon himself. He never leads us where He won’t go first.

Am I willing to renounce all that I have, deny myself, and follow Him? Not just halfway, but all in? Our main objective in life should be to share the gospel and make disciples of Jesus. I cried listening to this message. I repented. I told God I was sorry because I have not lived this way. These are really difficult truths. Really difficult and disturbing. But the verses I have shared are the very words of Jesus. They are from God’s Word.

So what do we do with this? Many of you may already have it figured out, but I’m still wrestling. But I feel hope, and excitement, and a bit nervous. What if God asks me to give up everything for Him? Oh wait, that is what He is asking!

Jesus said, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” - Mark 1:17

As I struggle with this today, one thing I know with all my heart.

He is totally worth it.

Lord, you never said this was going to be easy. We are sheep out there with a bunch of wolves. But we have You as our Shepherd, and that is more than enough. Open our hearts to your plan and will, and give us the courage to count the cost, die to ourselves, and follow you with an “all in” kind of faith. Amen.
